Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) hosted the Orientation Programme for students of International Foundation Year Programme (IFYP) on 18 September 2026. Faculty members introduced campus features, facilities, regulations, and support services to the new cohort. Several local students served as “Buddies” to help newcomers adapt to a new environment.

Senior management and department heads attended the event, including Professor Catherine Sun, Senior Vice President; Ms Sophia Yip, Associate Vice President (Student Affairs); Dr Michelle Chan, Director of IFYP and Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature; and Mr Rico Chan, Director of International and Greater China Student Support Office.

In her welcoming remarks, Professor Sun noted that students come from cultural backgrounds different from Hong Kong’s and may experience culture shock. She emphasised that mutual respect is paramount, encouraging students not only to acquire knowledge but also to cultivate character, explore Hong Kong culture, attend classes punctually, observe university regulations, and maintain a positive attitude.

Ms Sophia Yip highlighted HKSYU’s strong emphasis on integrity, urging freshmen to adhere to university regulations and remain mindful of their speech and behaviour. Furthermore, Dr Michelle Chan encouraged students to interact with local students and integrate into the local community.

Now in its third cohort, the International Foundation Year Programme—the first one-year programme in Hong Kong specifically designed for international students—has admitted a total of 23 new students from Pakistan, India, Iran, and Kenya in the current academic year.
