The Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) held a 55th Anniversary Community Service Project event on 3rd July. Partnering with the HKPC Academy under the Hong Kong Productivity Council, the department hosted a one-hour workshop titled “Preserving Memory in ‘3D’: Digital Heritage in a New Dimension” during the annual EdTech event, “Summer TechEd Fest 2026.”
During the event, Dr Tsang Chung-kin, Associate Head of the Department of Sociology, alongside event assistants, introduced more than 20 parents and primary school students to 3D scanning technology and explored how cultural heritage can be transformed into digital representations. Through hands-on experience, participants learned how to use 3D scanning tools to create digital models, gaining insight into the role of technology in heritage preservation.
Ethan Chan, a primary two student at La Salle Primary School, shared that he loves ancient artifacts and was thrilled to learn how 3D scanning technology is used to preserve ancient culture during the event. He even showed off his creative side on the spot, joking that he hopes to use 3D scanning in the future to submerge an entire city underwater, turning it into a “subterranean city” that would amaze tourists.
