More than 30 seniors visited the campus of Hong Kong Shue Yan University on 7 July to participate in a public lecture titled “Beyond Entertainment: Extended Reality and Our New Digital Life” and a mini e-sports competition organised by the Department of Applied Data Science. The event provided participants a lively introduction to the digital world.

During the public lecture, Dr WONG Ying-kit, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Data Science, presented an overview of extended reality (XR) technologies, which include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and wearable electronics (WE). Building on this foundation, the session explored how these technologies are transforming digital entertainment, cultural consumption, and everyday living. It also highlighted the role of technological innovation in advancing digital transformation within the humanities.

Following the lecture, participants took part in a mini e-sports competition held in the Game Development Laboratory. With guidance from student assistants, the senior citizens experienced popular video games including “Fall Guys” and “League of Legends”. They also experienced immersive demonstrations of the University’s research projects by wearing VR headsets in the Virtual Reality Laboratory.

Mr LAW, a social worker from the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, noted that the activity provided seniors new experiences beyond their daily routines and helped equip them to face future challenges with greater confidence.
