Dr Henry HU Hung-lick, Founding President of Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU), passed away on 27 July 2025 at the age of 105. A funeral service was held in August at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point, where leaders from across the political, legal, and education sectors gathered to honour his life and legacy.
Among those attending were Mr LUO Yonggang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; former Chief Executives Mrs Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet-ngor and Mr Donald TSANG Yam-kuen; Mr Eric CHAN Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration and HKSYU alumnus; Mr Paul CHAN Mopo, Financial Secretary; and Dr Christine CHOI Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education.
The education community was represented by Professor Alexander WAI, President of Hong Kong Baptist University; representatives from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong; and Mr LI Lu, President of Zhejiang Shuren University.
The memorial was also attended by principals and teachers of institutions Dr HU helped to establish, including Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School, and Sha Tin Wai Dr.Catherine F. Woo Memorial School, as were representatives of the Shaoxing Residents Association.
Members of the legal profession included retired judge and member of HKSYU Board of Governors Mr WOO Kwok-hing and Senior Counsel Ms Audrey EU.
From within the Shue Yan community, Mr Kenneth TING Woo-shou, Chairman of the HKSYU Board of Governors; Vice Chairman Dr Francis CHEUNG; several board members; and numerous faculty members, students, and alumni joined together to extend condolences to Dr HU’s family.
Dr HU was laid to rest the following morning at the Hong Kong Cemetery in Happy Valley, alongside his late wife Dr CHUNG Chi-yung, co-founder of HKSYU.
Serving as pallbearers were senior political and education leaders including Mr Kenneth TING Woo-shou; Mrs Regina IP LAU Suk-yee, Legislative Council Member and Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council; Ms Elsie LEUNG Oi-sie, former Secretary for Justice; Mr WONG Yan-lung, former Secretary for Justice; Professor Ambrose KING Yeo-chi, former Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Mr LI Lu.
