The Department of Economics and Finance at Hong Kong Shue Yan University has been offering internship programmes for nine years since 2016. The programmes has built partnerships with various publicly listed companies, corporate groups, financial institutions, and non-profit organizations, providing students with opportunities to gain industry experience and understand how society functions.
One of its long-term partners is Credit Union League of Hong Kong (CULHK), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged communities by providing professional personal financial management services. Through the collective savings of its members, CULHK offers low-interest loans that improve its members’ lives and enhance their overall welfare.
Students from the Department had the opportunity to learn about the practical operations, social significance, and contributions of microfinance through internships at CULHK. Many graduates have since become members and volunteers of the organization. Dr Lucas Poon Che-cheong, the former head of the Department of Economics and Finance, currently serves as a director of CULHK.
Hong Kong CU Movement Charity Fund, established by CULHK, focuses on youth development and educational promotion. The Foundation has successfully funded over 1,000 underprivileged students to complete high school in Mainland China. Additionally, it collaborates with local tertiary institutions to provide scholarships, bursaries, and internship programmes, encouraging students to study diligently and embrace the values of self-help and mutual assistance.
In the past, the Foundation has provided two scholarships annually to support interns in the Department of Economics and Finance. Many graduates have gone on to become volunteers for the Foundation, including Mr Eric Kwok Ka-wai, a 2014 graduate who currently serves as a board member of the Hong Kong CU Movement Charity Fund.
Hong Kong CU Movement Charity Fund celebrated its 15th anniversary with a commemorative dinner on August 9, 2025. Dr Raymond Yeung, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, attended on behalf of the department and delivered a congratulatory speech.
