Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) held its 55th Anniversary Luncheon and Long Service Awards Ceremony. A total of 105 staff members, who have served the University for between 10 and 41 years, were honoured with Long Service Awards in recognition of their longstanding dedication and contributions.
The historic occasion was witnessed by more than 600 guests, including Mr Eric Chan Kwok-ki, Chief Secretary for Administration, and his wife; Dr Christine Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education; members of HKSYU senior management; Legislative Council members; and representatives from political, business, academic, and cultural sectors, alongside alumni, faculty, staff, and students. The celebration marked both the 55th anniversary of Shue Yan’s founding and 20 years since attaining university status.
In his opening remarks, Dr Hu Fai-chung, President of HKSYU, expressed his gratitude to all sectors of the community for accompanying and supporting Shue Yan over the years in its commitment to providing quality education and advancing both teaching and academic research. ‘Ultimately, what has driven Shue Yan to steadfastly follow the path we believe in all these years is four simple words – “敦仁博物” (Cultivating virtues of benevolence; broadening horizon and knowledge),’ Dr Hu said.
He noted that Shue Yan was founded with the mission of providing one more opportunity for motivated young people to fulfil their potential and become confident and responsible individuals who contribute to society. ‘Regardless of the reasons for which students enrol, we hope that when they graduate and leave our doors, they will do so feeling fulfilled and confident, ready to face the world with their heads held high,’ he said.
HKSYU alumnus Mr Eric Chan expressed support for the University’s vision of “Reimagining Liberal Arts Education in the Digital Age”, noting that it aligns closely with the Government’s strategy of promoting the integrated development of education, technology and talent. He said, “I am confident that Shue Yan will seize the opportunities arising from the country’s development and leverage its unique strengths to attract more outstanding students from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and around the world to pursue their studies and build their future here. In doing so, the University will continue to nurture talented individuals with vision, a sense of responsibility and a commitment to serving both Hong Kong and the nation.”
The ceremony concluded with closing remarks by Professor Sun Tien-lun, Senior Vice President of HKSYU. She thanked guests from across the community for celebrating the University’s 55th anniversary. She noted that the true value of a university is not measured solely by numbers, buildings or rankings, but by generations of people who believe in the value of education and are committed to upholding its spirit. Professor Sun also paid special tribute to the 105 Long Service Award recipients, thanking them for their years of dedicated service in upholding Shue Yan’s culture and spirit, supporting the growth of students across generations.
