Hong Kong Shue Yan University held its Inauguration Ceremony at Lady Lily Shaw Hall on 25 August 2026. The ceremony was conducted in two sessions, attended by members of the university management—including President Dr Hu Fai-chung, Senior Vice President Professor Catherine Sun Tien-lun, Vice President (Academic) Professor Selina Chan Ching, and Vice President (University Administration) Dr Jason Chow Tak-sang—alongside heads of academic departments, scholars, administrative heads, and nearly two thousand freshmen.
In her speech, Professor Selina Chan shared the history, heritage, and aspirations of Shue Yan University. Introducing the university’s two founders, Dr Henry Hu Hung-lick and Dr Chung Chi-yung, she highlighted that: “Guided by compassion, fairness, justice, and civic duty, they founded Shue Yan not merely to award qualifications, but to broaden young people’s horizons, deepen their knowledge, and nurture their character, integrity, social conscience, and care for others. As we celebrate the university’s 55th anniversary, the founding mission of ‘敦仁博物’ (Cultivating virtues of benevolence; broadening horizon and knowledge) remains a living guide for you today.”
Professor Chan further noted that in an age transformed by AI, knowledge is more accessible than ever. However, she emphasised that university education is not only about acquiring information: “It is about widening your vision, deepening your understanding, and developing the critical thinking needed to judge, question, and apply knowledge wisely. At Shue Yan, I hope you will learn with your teachers, with your classmates, and with AI, testing assumptions, exchanging perspectives, and using what you learn with responsibility and purpose.”
Following the Inauguration Ceremony, orientation activities were hosted by Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Communication, Information and Creative Industries. Faculty members met with new students to introduce course outlines and the latest departmental developments, helping them prepare for the new academic year.
