On August 6, 2024, HKSYU Deputy President Dr HU Fai-chung participated in a celebrity bridge tournament at the invitation of Mr Derek ZEN, President of the Hong Kong, China Contract Bridge Association. Mr ZEN is also a sponsor of the “Chinese Martial Arts and Sports Culture Communication,” a research project under the University’s Department of Journalism and Communication.

Mr ZEN, who also serves as the Chairman of Build King Holdings and Road King Infrastructure, hoped that the annual tournament could attract more people to appreciate the depth and enjoyment of the game. He expressed his ambition to promote bridge in secondary schools, aiming to elevate the game to a status comparable to that of music and physical education. Mr ZEN highlighted the game’s emphasis on rational judgment and logical thinking, qualities highly regarded by engineers, which can greatly contribute to students’ cognitive development. He believes that these skills will enhance students’ ability to make thoughtful decisions in both their personal and professional futures.

A seasoned bridge player, Mr ZEN won a silver medal with the Hong Kong men’s team at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. In 2023, serving as team manager, he led the Hong Kong team to a historic gold medal in the men’s team event at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
