To enhance inclusive education, the Department of Counselling and Psychology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) has been offering Basic, Advanced, and Thematic Courses for Teacher Professional Development on Catering for Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) since 2024. More than 1,000 teachers have completed this 10‑day programme, which focuses on supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Mental Illness through optimised teaching and practical placements.
Professor Hue Ming‑tak, Vice President (Graduate School) and Programme Coordinator, together with Professor Kwok Kan, Professor of Practice, explained how the training helps equip teachers with practical classroom skills. Professor Kwok shared her experience of teaching sex education to young people with ASD, emphasising the importance of respecting differences in sexuality, gender, and neurodiversity. Professor Hue added that feedback on HKSYU’s courses has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants reporting enhanced self‑efficacy and confidence in supporting students with SEN.
