Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) held its 2024/25 Annual Scholarship Award Ceremony on April 29, 2025, at Lady Lily Shaw Hall, recognizing 361 outstanding students for their academic achievements, service, and perseverance.

The ceremony was officiated by The Hon CHU Kwok-keung, Legislative Councillor (Education Constituency),and attended by university senior management and representatives from sponsoring organizations.

This year’s awards included 259 academic scholarships, 72 voluntary service scholarships, and 30 bursaries, totaling HK$3.5 million in HKSYU scholarships. Combined with funding from the HKSAR Government’s Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme and other university awards, the total value of scholarships and bursaries distributed in the 2024/25 academic year reached nearly HK$10 million.

In her remarks, Professor Catherine SUN, HKSYU Senior Vice President, congratulated the awardees and praised their determination and excellence. She said the scholarships and bursaries aim to recognize students’ outstanding performance in academic results and voluntary service.

She expressed hope that the awards would empower them to continue striving, serving, and giving back to both the university and society.

HKSYU Senior Vice President Professor Catherine SUN delivered the welcome address and expressed great pride in the award recipients.

Mr CHU, in his address, congratulated the awardees for their outstanding performance through hard work, perseverance, and dedication over the past year. He also paid tribute to HKSYU’s longstanding contributions to self-financing higher education in Hong Kong. He cited recent accolades—including the university’s three-year run as the top-ranked private tertiary institution in the city by QS and five faculty members being listed among the world’s top 2% of scientists—as evidence of its growing stature.

As HKSYU approaches its 55th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its university status next year, Mr CHU expressed confidence in the institution’s continued mission to nurture talent with moral integrity and a deep sense of national identity. He believes students are equipped not only with skills and intellect but also with a positive mindset and a sense of well-being, aligning with the university’s motto, “Cultivating virtues of benevolence; broadening horizon and knowledge.”

Legislative Councillor (Education Constituency) CHU Kwok-keung officiated at the award presentation ceremony.
Ms Sophia YIP Sau-yin, HKSYU Associate Vice President (Student Affairs), announced the total amount of donations for this year’s scholarships and bursaries.

Awardees’ representative LAM Wai-ting, a final-year undergraduate in Business Administration, described the awards as both recognition and motivation. She said her fellow awardees express deep gratitude to the university and the benefactors whose generosity makes such opportunities possible. The awards also remind them of the responsibility that comes with recognition.

First-year Business Administration student Zumbehl Ben David, an international student from the United States, was awarded the CMB Wing Lung Bank Scholarship. He said the scholarship was an unexpected honor and that he is motivated to continue learning and growing at the university.
