Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) celebrated the grand opening of its state-of-the-art “Digital Imaging Laboratory” on December 4, 2024. The event featured an innovative virtual roast pig cutting ceremony that seamlessly blended digital technology with Chinese cultural heritage.

Government officials, industry representatives, and HKSYU senior management attended the opening ceremony of the Digital Imaging Laboratory.

Professor HU Yao-su, the Provost of HKSYU, expressed his sincere gratitude for the government funding that enabled the university to recruit top-tier academic staff from the art and technology sectors and establish this advanced facility. He emphasized the university’s commitment to preparing students for a rapidly evolving world by integrating digital innovation with liberal arts education. He envisions the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Arts, Culture, and Technology (ACT) as a balanced program combining humanities and science, with the first cohort expected to graduate in 2027 and make meaningful contributions to society.

Professor Catherine SUN, Senior Vice President of HKSYU, highlighted that the ACT program aims to cultivate talent in both art and technology, aligning with the university’s strategic goal of “reinventing liberal arts education for the digital era.” In addition, the upcoming Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Digital Solutions for Entertainment and Game Applications, set to launch in the next academic year, is another interdisciplinary program designed to meet industry needs while fostering innovation in Hong Kong. This new program has also received support from the Education Bureau (EDB).

Mr Esmond LEE Chung-sin, Deputy Secretary for Education of the HKSAR, expressed his delight at the opening of the “Digital Imaging Laboratory” at HKSYU. In his speech, he praised the university’s pioneering efforts in the self-financing higher education sector, particularly in support of the government’s “Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education.” This scheme aims to provide financial assistance to institutions developing market-driven programs, and HKSYU’s applications under this initiative have been exemplary.

The event also showcased a national intangible cultural heritage project curated by Professor Selina CHAN Ching, the Academic Vice President of HKSYU. Professor CHAN, from the Department of Sociology, presented a 3D model and a 360-degree virtual exhibition depict-ing the Hungry Ghosts (Yulan) Festival.
