Established in the 2022/23 academic year, Hong Kong Shue Yan University’s Flag-raising Team is responsible for conducting flag-raising ceremonies on important campus occasions.
To strengthen member training, the University invited three personnel from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison to visit the campus on 15 March 2026, delivering training in flag raising techniques and Chinese-style foot drill. Dr CHOW Tak-sang, Vice President (University Administration), and Ms YIP Sau-yin, Associate Vice President (Student Affairs), attended the session and interacted with the visiting personnel.
Ms YIP highlighted that HKSYU was one of the first universities to receive guidance from the Hong Kong Garrison, calling it a rare and valuable opportunity. She hopes that the Flag raising Team will continue serving the University and grow into a more professional uniformed team.
Participating student Tony CHUNG (Year 3, Chinese Language and Literature) described the training as rigorous and professional, noting that he had learned the rhythm and skills required to pull the flag rope properly. Another student, Chloe LIN (Year 2, Chinese Language and Literature), received focused coaching on entry and drill posture, and said she hoped to showcase her training to the public in the future.
The Flag raising Team currently comprises 26 members from 11 departments, including one graduate who is still actively involved. In April, the team will invite the Hong Kong Garrison to provide further guidance again, continuing to strengthen its drill skills.
