The Department of Counselling and Psychology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) welcomed back its postgraduate alumni for its inaugural reunion dinner on May 30, 2025. More than 130 alumni and faculty members gathered to reconnect and celebrate the shared memories from their academic journeys.
In a special gesture of appreciation, the department staged a spirited musical performance featuring four English and Chinese songs performed by Dr FU Wai, Associate Professor, and a team of current and past students, bringing the evening to an emotional crescendo.
Senior university management in attendance included Professor Catherine SUN Tien-lun, senior Vice President; Dr Jason CHOW Tak-sang, Vice President (University Administration); Professor TANG So-kum, Vice President (Graduate School); and Dr Alex LI Wang-on, Associate Academic Vice President (University Research).
In her remarks, Professor SUN reflected on the early beginnings of the department’s master’s programme in counselling psychology in 2008. She paid tribute to Professor TANG’s instrumental role in its establishment. She also spoke fondly of her own time in the classroom: “Every student was eager to learn—and to engage with me.” She expressed her wish to return to the classroom once more before retirement. Professor SUN also shared the news of a planned campus expansion, inviting alumni to return for visits in future.
Dr Joe NGAI Tsz-kin, Assistant Professor and a graduate of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Counselling and Psychology, described his time at HKSYU as a “training ground for life”. “The campus and curriculum may have evolved, the warmth of Shue Yan community remains unchanged.”
