Department of Chinese Language and Literature Dedicated to Promoting Chinese Culture

As one of the founding departments of HKSYU, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature has journeyed through over half a century. Rooted in the university’s mission of benevolent education, the Department remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting Chinese culture.

Professor YANG Ruowei, Head of Department, emphasised that the Department actively aligns with the University’s “Digital Humanities” strategy. By integrating emerging technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and digital archiving—into teaching and research, the Department continues to broaden its curriculum and academic horizons. In line with this vision, it will launch the “Master of Arts in Chinese Language, Literature and Teaching” programme in the 2026/27 academic year.

“Our Department possesses a profound traditional heritage while maintaining a forward-looking, contemporary vision,” Professor YANG remarked. The discipline encompasses Chinese Classical Philology, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Chinese Linguistics, and Chinese Teaching. In recent years, the academic team has secured funding from the Hong Kong Government and various foundations to undertake both foundational and applied research projects. Faculty members encourage collaborative research with students, placing equal emphasis on building a solid academic foundation and pursuing bold innovations that foster interdisciplinary dialogue.

The Department also plays an active role in community engagement. Through knowledge transfer initiatives—including public lectures, book clubs, workshops, cultural guided tours, and school services— it transforms academic research into practical cultural and educational contributions to society.

Marking the University’s 55th anniversary as a new milestone, the Department will continue to build on its legacy, pass the torch to future generations, and nurture a new generation of Chinese language talent for Hong Kong, the nation, and the global community. Professor YANG extends his best wishes to all staff and students for continued success in writing a brilliant new chapter, cultivating talent, and contributing to society.
