The Department of Counselling and Psychology hosted an event on 6 August under the theme “Supporting the Holistic Development of Children with ADHD,” led by Dr Bess LAM Yin-hung, Associate Head (Postgraduate Studies) of the Department.
Dr LAM directs the Brain Stimulation Laboratory and the MSS in Psychology Programme, with expertise in non-invasive brain stimulation, neuropsychology, neurocriminology, mental health in underprivileged groups, AI in digital mental health, and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, among others.
This community service project integrated brain stimulation techniques with physical activity interventions to provide science-based support for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Through structured physical activities and cognitive training, the project helped children gradually enhance their concentration and self-regulation abilities, thereby promoting balanced physical and mental wellbeing. By addressing the practical needs of children with ADHD in their learning and development, the project also demonstrated how academic research could be translated into accessible, community based support, accompanying children as they build a more stable and positive foundation for growth.
Jean, who brought her two children to experience a 30-minute brain stimulation session, shared that she was initially referred to the service through the “Community Living Room.” After undergoing continuous testing, her children showed noticeable improvements in focus and a significant boost in home studying efficiency. Her older son, Timmy, saw a dramatic leap in his academic performance, which greatly relieved her immense caregiving pressure. Timmy added that he was initially worried the electrified headset might cause discomfort, but he later found it felt just like wearing a regular hat with no unusual sensations, allowing him to tackle his schoolwork with much greater ease.
